I had hoped that I wouldn't run into this, but, alas, I have, and must post something about it here, because it's already getting out of hand. What is this elusive 'it,' you ask? Ad-libbing.
The only reason I'm proclaiming that ad-libbing is not allowed is because it really, REALLY messes peoples' plot-lines up when one person assumes that their character knows something that they don't/shouldn't; chaos ensues. I'm in a lot of rps, and in most of them ad-libbing has caused a lot of trouble, so I'm going to put a stop to it now.
As an example - and I don't mean to pinpoint certain people, it's just that this is the most blatant case thus far - some players are having their characters rattle on about how certain said characters are that Sirius and Remus are, indeed, a couple. When a player writes "out of his/her sight" or "out of his/her earshot" it is automatically assumed that the character hears and/or sees nothing that follows until he/she is addressed again. So far so good? Also, when Sirius and Remus are acting buddy-buddy it's because they are buddy-buddy and that's how they always act. Even though the player knows there's more there, the character does not, therefore characters can't randomly pick up on things that weren't there to pick up on in the first place.
If Sirius and Remus were having sex in the middle of the hospital wing and your character saw, then yes: it could become a part of your character's knowledge; however, if Sirius was joking around with Remus - like he always does - and Remus was joking back, then it cannot be assumed that your character already knows about their relationship, as they're best friends and they just act like that.
Nobody is in trouble or anything. Besides, I'm too nice to actually kick somebody out of an rp for something this tiny, but I do ask that you just...refrain from doing it again. Rather, read through the posts veeeery carefully. If it looks like your character shouldn't know it, they probably shouldn't.
I don't know if I'm making any sense here, as I slept for six hours last night and am barely coherent as is, let alone the whole typing thing.
So...just use your common sense here. Good friends = playing around...not automaticallyinarelationship. Same goes with the scene in the Great Hall. Sirius saved Remus from boredom. He didn't snog him in the middle of the hall. If they weren't in a relationship, it would have most likely played out the same way, as they're really good friends and are inherently goofy and snarky. I'm just trying to make everybody happy, and when the cover is blown in a manner that isn't true to events in the rp, people get mad, because they spent the extra time being careful that everything was covered up and whatnot.
However, some people have innate agreements with others about ad-libbing. For example, as many of you know I, Erin, play Alex in this game. Redd, whom I rp with on a daily basis, plays Flint. We talk to and/or rp with each other nearly every day, so we've got this intrinsic ad-libbing rule with each-other: I can ad-lib her characters, and she can ad-lib mine. This is because a) I trust her to do the right thing, and b) most of my characters are in relationships with hers anyway. So, yes. It's allowed, but on a permission-by-player basis, which contradicts something I said earlier, I think, but I'm sleepy, so neh.
That was it. This applies to everyone and everything, but, as earlier stated, that example is the easiest to identify and use. The rp is going really well, though...and I'm having looots of fun...so yay! Okay. Sleep.
Oh, and some people didn't catch this, or so I've seen, so I'm re-posting it:
The game opens the week before final exams. They're all next week, and then the OWLs/NEWTs are the next week. This means that your characters will start the next term in the year that they're listed as in the info thing.
So, for example (I'm an example WHORE), Alex is listed a seventh-year, so he's a sixth-year until exams are over, then NEXT term he'll be a seventh-year. That confusion is my fault...I did the info in a ditzy way.
